Palestinian rapper Belly, deemed Canada’s original gangsta rapper and called an ambassador of peace for his thought provoking, descriptive lyrics about bringing people together and denouncing war, is heating it up in his first year qualifying for MuchMusic’s Video Awards, Canada’s version of MTV’s VMA’s. Belly has secured four nominations in major categories for the video from his first single, “Pressure,” which went Top 10 on the Canadian charts. The video is nominated for “Best Video,” “Best Director,” “Best Cinematography” and “Best Rap Video.” MMVA is slated for June 17. Belly is in good company. Others nominated include Akon, Hilary Duff, Fergie, My Chemical Romance and Justin Timberlake, among others. The Canadian release of Belly’s debut album, The Revolution, is slated for June 5.
Belly’s powerful and vivid video for his track “History of Violence,” which looks at the hypocrisy and devastation of the war in Iraq and other Middle Eastern territories, is gaining more and more fans on YouTube. In the past week alone, over 2000 people have viewed the video that was shot in the ‘hoods of Ottawa’s southside and West Montreal and incorporates news footage, documentary style, from the Iraq War, as well as war footage from his native Palestine. The shoot drew hip-hop heads from cultures around the world to participate, including Palestinians, Lebanese, Iraqis, Ghanaians, Haitians, Jamaicans, Somalis, Canadians, French Canadians and Americans, some bringing flags from their mother countries. Prior to the Stanley Cup finals, Belly was kickin’ it with the Ottawa Senators. Belly wrote and recently recorded a fresh track rooting the team on, called “Go Sens Go!” Team Goalie Sugar Ray Emery lent a hand in the studio and it’s was catching a lot of heat just before the team went to the Stanley Cup Finals. Now, as they are immersed in the finals, the song is hotter than ever. As Emery shouts out on the track, “We go Hard, We Win, Belly with the Ottawa Senators. CHAMPIONS BABY!!!” Key hip-hop station HOT 89.9 is playing the track every hour and Comcast’s “Sportsnet” just aired a piece with the Senators in the studio with Belly to record another version of the song. Attached is a photo of Belly with Sugar Ray Emery.
